In Latinx culture gender roles from family and community play a prominent role in our upbringing to help shape us. A huge part of growing up is being exposed to the media, another force from which we receive ideas about gender. In Latinx media -- which ranges from films, television, literature, and social platforms -- there is minimal coverage of LGBTQ individuals. Espectadores Como Yo attempts to document the history of the LGBTQ community in Latinx media. Although this work begins by documenting the problematic representations of the LGBTQ community in earlier Latinx media, the contemporary works documented explore a more truthful side to the LGBTQ community. This project also works to create a space for queer Latinx individuals to understand the history of their community better and carve out a space for thought and understanding for the community.
